Gestational Surrogacy (IVF / In Vitro Fertilization)
In Vitro Fertilization or IVF as it is commonly referred to and known by many as "a test tube baby" has helped numerous couples that are infertile, conceive and bear children. Today this process occurs in a petrie dish in a laboratory and not in a test tube. The In Vitro Fertilization procedure is a four-step process. First, the Intended Mother or Egg Donor will take medications to stimulate her ovaries which produces multiple eggs. Step two involves retrieving the eggs from the ovaries. Once the eggs have been retrieved, step three is the fertilization of the eggs and culture of the embryos in the IVF Laboratory. Once the eggs are appropriately fertilized, the fourth and final step occurs. This step involves placing the embryos into the uterus of the Surrogate for implantation (which is referred to as the Embryo Transfer). The Embryo Transfer may take place on day 3 or day 5 depending on the grade and quality of the embryos. If the embryos are transferred into the uterus of the Surrogate on day 5 they are no longer considered embryos (which are anywhere from 4-8 cell) but Blastocysts (multi-celled embryos which the cells have divided so much they can no longer be counted). Following the Embryo Transfer, Surrogates should be prepared to be on strict bed rest for 48-72 hours. During this time the Embryos or Blastocysts have the best chance of implantation into the uterine wall, thus creating a pregnancy!
Traditional Surrogacy (AI / Artificial Insemination)
Being a Traditional Surrogate means
being able to carry a baby for nine months that is a part of you and knowing
in your heart that you will not have a problem giving that baby to the
Parents once it's born. There is a biological link to the child you will
be carrying, which is not the case of a Gestational Surrogate. In AI or
Artificial Insemination you would be inseminated with the sperm of the
Intended Father during your ovulatory cycle. You will be carefully monitored
by the physician by having routine ultrasounds and blood tests. Occasionally,
a shot of HCG is also given to trigger ovulation.
